After retaining our place in the top league with a last day victory away to North Berwick last season, the Kilspindie Winter League Team were looking forward to the 20/21 Winter League campaign starting. When the fixtures were announced we were surprised to see that our first 6 matches were all scheduled away from home, however that can be offset by saying the next 6 will all be at home! Our first match of the season took us along the road to newly promoted Longniddry, in what is always a tough fixture. In a tight match that could have swung either way, the team came up just short losing 3-2 in cold conditions.
Next up was Haddington on their new course layout which clearly caused confusion amongst our team as the home side ran out comfortable 5-0 winners. This was a disappointing result for us as we’ve been successful there in the past, however you can’t underestimate the strength of the Haddington side this season as they’ve set the early pace and currently sit top of the league after 3 games having also beaten last seasons league winners Tantallon and taking a point away to Craigielaw.
Our third consecutive game on the road was a quick jump over the wall to Craigielaw in the local derby. In really windy conditions we managed to get our first win of the season with a deserved 3-2 win. This victory took us off the bottom of the league and saw us leapfrog both Longniddry and Royal Musselburgh to fifth place overall. Unfortunately since then our next two fixtures have been cancelled due to Scottish Golf instructions relating to Covid. Hopefully, we’ll be back out on the links soon enough.
Thanks to everyone who has played for us this season so far, we really do appreciate your efforts.
