Sadly results haven’t gone our way in the East Lothian Winter League since the Christmas break. We’ve played three matches in 2018 and come out second best in them all. In the league we faced tricky matches against our nearest rivals for promotion in the shape of The Glen and Longniddry. We were narrowly beaten 3-2 by The Glen and came up short against Longniddry 4.5-0.5 which has ended our hopes of promotion for this season. As seems to have been the case for most of this campaign, its been a little bit of good fortune against us, a putt holed here and there or a lucky break that has seen matches turn on their head and we’ve just come up short in the closing holes. Its now two from three for promotion between Longniddry, The Glen and Castle Park, with only 2 points separating them.
This left us with our only chance of success coming in the Cup where we faced a tough home game against Haddington from the top division. Had the match finished after 18 holes we’d have won 3-2, having picked up two wins and two halves out of the 5 matches. However, the Cup doesn’t work like that as halved matches are played to a finish and disappointingly we lost both halved matches to be edged out 3-2, one on the 19th hole and the other on the 20th. Yet another case of fine margins costing us dear.
So we have one league match remaining this season against Thorntree and we hope to finish with a win to set us up for The Winter League Strokeplay Tournament at Longniddry before the summer competitions come round again with The Lothians Team Tournament at Royal Musselburgh, The Dispatch Trophy at the Braids and the 150th County Cup at Kilspindie.
All in all a disappointing campaign for us this season but we have a good base of players and will be looking to get back in the top league next season.
We’d just like to thank everyone who has represented the Club so far this season. The Club really appreciates the efforts and time commitments by everyone involved with the Winter League Team and we look forward to competing again next season.
