April 2017

Hello Members

Juniors

Following on from a successful Social evening involving parents and new Junior members the youngsters have had two KGC  medals and a team match at Gullane. Its early days but signs are good regarding new Kilspindie golfing stars. It seems Mackenzie Notley on the boys’ side and Molly Nicholson on the girls are the early pacesetters but there is plenty of time for the others to make their mark.

150th Anniversary Events

Our Anniversary year got off to a great start with the Men’s Annual Dinner. Our guest Speaker was Len Murray, a retired solicitor  and renowned After Dinner Speaker throughout the UK. The meal was excellent and the service from Paul’s team in the kitchen and Marion’s behind the bar complemented  the evening.

On the golfing side we started the year with a Captain v Vice Captain Match and this was followed by soup & sandwiches in the clubhouse. A great day was had by all and there was a desire expressed for this to be permanent fixture in the Kilspindie golfing diary. My thanks to Keith for selecting a great team for me as we managed to return a convincing  victory. My grateful thanks to Eric Davidson and Ian  Ramsay for stepping in at short notice thereby ensuring both teams had a balanced  side.

**The next item on the golfing side is on Thursday 27th April and Friday 28th April. On the Thursday we have been challenged to a 24 a side match against the British Golf Collectors Society using Hickory clubs. In view of this I was successful in persuading East Lothian Council to sponsor the event. Many of the golfers in the opposition will be from further afield. Their members hail from Scandinavia in particular and other parts of Europe, in addition to the UK. The sponsorship will be utilised to hire suitable sets of hickory clubs for members’ use both on the Thursday and the Friday, at no cost to the member. If you wish to dress in attire of the period then you are welcome to do so, though that is not a stipulation. There are various notices around the clubhouse so please add your name as soon as possible as we would like to confirm to the BGCS that we can field a team. There will be a two course meal provided for the participants. following the match

On the Friday, 28th April, we are holding a 150th Anniversary Hickory Open. Clubs will be available to members at no cost for this event. There should be sufficient sets on hand for members’ guests who wish to take part and the charge for the hire will be minimal for them thanks to ELC help. Application forms for this event can be found in the new dispensers in the Locker rooms. This Open is open to both men and women and there will be prizes for both.

Ladies 5-a-side Handicap League team

I am happy to record the Ladies got their golfing year off to a great start with an away victory against Gullane last Sunday, over Gullane No1. Well done girls.

New Members Evening

We have welcomed in our new members for 2017 with a traditional social evening and it went down very well. I am grateful to Keith Martin for setting that up and I was well supported by Diane Huish Lady Captain and Maggie Clark, Lady Vice Captain. In addition, Chris Stirling and John Stenton , fellow Directors helped to pass on their knowledge of the club in terms of the day to day practical needs of new members.

Communication

Our new website is now fully functional and online booking is now possible. If any of you are technology challenged then do not worry as a phone call to either Graeme in the Pro shop or Keith & Lorna in the office will have you booked in. We have an IT expert working on a new App for smart phone use so that will be a source of online booking also in due course in addition to providing useful information regarding events at the club.

The survey we asked you to complete  has now been finalised and we are tremendously encouraged by the response. It shows a genuine care for KGC. Once we have had a chance to talk to members of staff regarding points raised we will advise you of the findings.

Course Improvements

The new furniture, signage and ropeworks are starting to be completed. There are still ground based  markers to be put in place. I hope you feel they have improved the general quality feel to golfing at Kilspindie.

Finally, the next event following the Hickory Open will be a Golf in Scotland event and I would just remind you it is filling up fast. If you are interested I suggest you get your names down quickly.

The first Men’s qualifying Medal for the Club championships gets underway this weekend coming . Time to sharpen up your games lads.  Best of Luck.

Kind regards,

John S Anderson
